The search for a local ‘voice’ to give Logan Airport announcements and informational messages has come to an end. Massport announced 43-year-old Christopher Donisi as the “Voice of Logan” winner on Thursday.
Donisi is a husband and father of two who grew up in East Arlington, and currently lives in Burlington.
He was selected out of eight finalists by public vote. Massport leaders said they received 6,000 total submissions for the contest.
Donisi is an HVAC pipe fitter and usually stays out of the spotlight, but he decided to participate at his mother’s behest.
He said people have complemented his deep, baritone voice since it changed when he was about 12-years-old, so he figured he’d give it a shot.
“But when I heard how many people were auditioning, I didn’t think it was in my realm. But here I am today,” Donisi said.
Donning a Bruins sweatshirt, Donisi said he believes he was chosen because he brings “a real Boston attitude into play” and an authenticity he cultivated by living in different cities in the Greater Boston area.
Massport chief executive officer Rich Davey said he was “shocked” at the national attention the “Voice of Logan” competition garnered. But, he said, there is an allure around the vernacular of the Northeast.
“ We’ve got these great accents that are maybe unusual for other parts of the country,” Davey said. “But we have a lot of pride in that.”
And Davey agrees with the voters’ choice in picking Donisi.
“We’ve been making the joke that he’s a pipe fitter with pipes, right? I mean, he’s got this great voice,” Davey said.
Davey said Donisi will start recording messages next week, to help the airport prepare for the busy holiday travel season. He also said Donisi is free to use his pipes for other voicework, if he pleases.
Donisi said he is looking forward to recording messages for the airport, but he will be keeping his day job.
He is still soaking it all in.
“I’ve never had this much attention before, so it’s just a lot to handle — but in a good way, you know what I mean?,” Donisi said. “But I couldn’t be more happy to use my voice to represent the city, it’s huge to me.”
