A duck boat rolled onto its side while it was being towed out of the water on Saturday, sending 11 passengers to the hospital.
The amphibious vehicle, a staple ride for tourists visiting Boston, experienced mechanical issues during a Saturday afternoon trip, according to Massachusetts State Police. As it was being towed up a boat ramp at 10 Museum Way in Cambridge, tow rope broke and the vehicle tipped onto its side.
Of the 31 passengers aboard, 11 were sent to local hospitals with what is believed to be minor injuries, said state police spokesperson Sarah Burgess.
Boston Duck Tours said in a statement that it suspended tours for the rest of Saturday as a precaution. Tom Vigna, a spokesperson for the tours, said the company is working with police and the U.S. Coast Guard to investigate the incident.
Boston Duck Tours, which started in 1994, operates 28 boats, according to its website. During peak season, the company drives as many as 4,600 passengers around the city and in the Charles River. The boats are inspected annually by the Coast Guard, the company website says.
